Wistful Winnie Sketches

Original paper sketches of Wistful Winnie, by R.W Winfield

These original sketches by Winfield feature some of the earliest drawings of Wistful Winnie. In interviews, Winfield described her as a beastly creature that was more connected to nature rather than to animals or mankind. He disliked it when people referred to Winnie as an imp or goblin and corrected people who tried to describe her as a pixie, sprite, or fairy. He insisted that Winnie was a wist but gave no explanation as to what a wist was.

Wistful Winnie was inspired by Winfield’s numerous family trips to forests and far off lands when he was just a child. And as a child, he had memories of seeing something furry scurry into the underbrush, though he never clarified what kind of animal this was. Winfield acknowledged that, although Winnie was a creature of nature, she had no problem destroying other things around her, such as flowers.
